Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Paris. These are the trade-offs.
April to June
Spring — mild, long days, gardens at their best, before the summer crowds arrive.
September to October
Autumn, and many people's favourite: warm, quieter, and the city back at work after August.
July to August
Peak tourist season and hot, though many Parisians leave and parts of the city empty out.
November to March
Cold and grey, with the shortest queues and the lowest fares. Christmas markets in December.
Before you go
Schengen visa
Required in advance and slow to obtain. Start months ahead.
Museum pass
If you plan more than two or three major museums, the Paris Museum Pass usually pays for itself and skips ticket queues.
Pickpockets
Common on the Metro and around the main sights. Ordinary precautions, applied consistently.
August closures
Many independent restaurants and shops close for much of August.
About Paris
Paris rewards a slower trip than most people give it. The headline sights are worth the queues once, but the city's real pleasure is in its arrondissements — Le Marais, Montmartre, the Latin Quarter — where the walking between things is the point.
It is also the easiest jumping-off point in Europe: the TGV reaches Lyon, Bordeaux and the Alps in a few hours, and London is two and a quarter hours by Eurostar.
Getting in from the airport
Charles de Gaulle (CDG) is about 25 km north-east of the city. The RER B train reaches Gare du Nord in around 35 minutes and is the fastest option at rush hour; the Roissybus serves Opéra. Taxis to central Paris are a fixed fare, which is worth knowing before anyone offers you a metered ride.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
This is a Schengen-area country, and South African passport holders require a Schengen visa arranged before travel. Applications involve an appointment, biometrics and supporting documents, and appointments are frequently booked out weeks ahead. Apply early, follow the official guidance for the country you are entering, and do not book non-refundable travel before the visa is granted.
Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
