About Rome
Rome is a city where three thousand years sit on top of each other, and the density is the point — the Pantheon, the Forum and the Trevi Fountain are all within a walk of each other, with the Vatican across the river.
It is also the natural entry point to Italy: Florence is an hour and a half by fast train, Naples about an hour, and the Amalfi Coast a morning's travel.
Getting in from the airport
Fiumicino (FCO) is about 30 km south-west of the city. The Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Termini in 32 minutes; taxis to the historic centre are a fixed fare, which is worth confirming before you get in.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
This is a Schengen-area country, and South African passport holders require a Schengen visa arranged before travel. Applications involve an appointment, biometrics and supporting documents, and appointments are frequently booked out weeks ahead. Apply early, follow the official guidance for the country you are entering, and do not book non-refundable travel before the visa is granted.
