Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Barcelona. These are the trade-offs.
May to June
Warm, long days, sea warming up, before the peak. The best combination.
September to October
Still warm enough to swim, with the summer crowds gone.
July to August
Hot, humid and at its busiest, with the beaches packed.
November to April
Mild winter by European standards, quietest, and the cheapest fares.
Before you go
Schengen visa
Required in advance. Apply early.
Book Gaudí sites
The Sagrada Família and Park Güell are timed-entry and sell out days ahead in season.
Pickpockets
Las Ramblas and the Metro have a real problem. Keep bags closed and in front of you.
Late meals
Dinner starts around 21:00. Restaurants before 20:00 are catering to tourists.
About Barcelona
Barcelona is the rare big city with a proper beach, and the combination — Gaudí's architecture, the Gothic Quarter, and the Mediterranean at the end of the street — is why it works for almost any kind of trip.
The Sagrada Família is the obvious draw and still unfinished; Park Güell and Casa Batlló fill out the Gaudí circuit. Beyond it, the Costa Brava is an hour north and the Pyrenees within three.
Getting in from the airport
El Prat (BCN) is about 15 km south-west of the centre. The Aerobús reaches Plaça de Catalunya in about 35 minutes and runs frequently; the R2 Nord train and Metro L9 are cheaper alternatives.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
This is a Schengen-area country, and South African passport holders require a Schengen visa arranged before travel. Applications involve an appointment, biometrics and supporting documents, and appointments are frequently booked out weeks ahead. Apply early, follow the official guidance for the country you are entering, and do not book non-refundable travel before the visa is granted.
Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
