About Lisbon
Lisbon is built across seven hills above the Tagus, and the light coming off the river is the thing people remember. It is one of Europe's more affordable capitals, with tiled facades, trams that climb impossible gradients, and a food scene that has become genuinely serious.
There is a long-standing Portuguese community in South Africa, and this route carries a lot of family travel. Sintra is forty minutes away by train, and the Algarve is under three hours by road.
Getting in from the airport
Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is unusually close — about 7 km from the centre, roughly 20 minutes. The Metro red line runs from the terminal and is the cheapest way in.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
This is a Schengen-area country, and South African passport holders require a Schengen visa arranged before travel. Applications involve an appointment, biometrics and supporting documents, and appointments are frequently booked out weeks ahead. Apply early, follow the official guidance for the country you are entering, and do not book non-refundable travel before the visa is granted.
