Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Amsterdam. These are the trade-offs.
April to May
Tulip season, with Keukenhof open for roughly eight weeks in spring. Mild and busy.
June to August
Warmest and longest days, with the canals and terraces at their best.
September to October
Quieter and cooler, with good value before the winter.
November to March
Cold, dark and cheapest, with the museums as the main draw.
Before you go
Schengen visa
Required in advance. Apply early.
Bicycles
Cyclists have priority and move fast. Look both ways before stepping into a bike lane — it is the most common way visitors get hurt here.
Book museums ahead
The Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum are timed-entry and sell out days in advance.
Cards
Many places are card-only, and some do not accept credit cards — a debit card is useful.
About Amsterdam
Amsterdam is compact, walkable and built around its canals, which is why it works so well for a short trip. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are within a few minutes of each other, and the Anne Frank House is a short walk from the centre.
There is a long history between the Netherlands and South Africa, and the route carries a good deal of family travel alongside the tourism.
Getting in from the airport
Schiphol (AMS) is about 15 km south-west of the centre, with direct trains to Amsterdam Centraal in around 15 minutes running very frequently. It is one of the easiest airport transfers in Europe.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
This is a Schengen-area country, and South African passport holders require a Schengen visa arranged before travel. Applications involve an appointment, biometrics and supporting documents, and appointments are frequently booked out weeks ahead. Apply early, follow the official guidance for the country you are entering, and do not book non-refundable travel before the visa is granted.
Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
