Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Singapore. These are the trade-offs.

  • February to April

The driest stretch and marginally less humid — the best window, such as it is.

  • May to September

Hot and humid with afternoon storms. The haze from regional fires can affect air quality some years.

  • November to January

Monsoon season with the heaviest rain, though showers are usually short.

Before you go

Humidity

Consistently hot and humid year-round. Plan indoor activity for the middle of the day.

Strict laws

Fines apply for things that are unremarkable elsewhere — littering, eating on the MRT, chewing gum imports. Drug offences carry extremely severe penalties.

Hawker centres

The best eating in the city, and cheap. Maxwell, Lau Pa Sat and Old Airport Road are the well-known ones.

Arrival card

An electronic arrival card must be submitted before you land. Do it before you fly.

About Singapore

Singapore is compact, efficient and considerably more interesting than its reputation for orderliness suggests. Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands are the postcard, but the hawker centres are the real draw — some of the best food in Asia, at prices that bear no relation to the city's cost of living.

It is also the natural Asian stopover from South Africa, and Changi is regularly rated the world's best airport, which makes a long layover genuinely pleasant.

Getting in from the airport

Changi (SIN) is about 20 km from the centre, with the MRT reaching downtown in around 30 minutes and taxis in about 20. Jewel, the terminal complex with the indoor waterfall, is worth time even if you are only connecting.

Entry requirements for South African passport holders

Singapore has generally admitted South African passport holders for short tourist stays without a visa arranged in advance, subject to holding onward travel and sufficient funds, and requires an electronic arrival card submitted before entry. Confirm the current requirement before you travel.

Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
