Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Phuket. These are the trade-offs.
November to April
Dry season on the Andaman coast — calm seas, clear water and the best diving. Peak period.
May to October
Monsoon. Heavier rain, rougher seas and swimming restrictions on some beaches, but much lower prices.
Before you go
No direct service
Every routing from South Africa connects, usually twice. Total journey time is long — build in a recovery day.
Monsoon swimming
Red flags on the west-coast beaches during the monsoon are serious. Rip currents cause drownings every year.
Island trips
Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay are the standard day trips and are busy. Going early makes a real difference.
About Phuket
Phuket is Thailand's largest island and its main beach destination, with the limestone karst scenery of Phang Nga Bay just offshore and the Similan Islands within reach for divers.
It is developed and busy in parts — Patong especially — but the quieter beaches in the north and the islands nearby are a different proposition entirely.
Getting in from the airport
Phuket International (HKT) is in the north of the island, about 30 km from Patong and up to an hour from the southern beaches. Arrange a transfer through your hotel — airport taxi pricing is inconsistent.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
Thailand operates visa exemptions and visa-on-arrival arrangements that vary by nationality, and the position for South African passport holders has changed over time. Confirm the current requirement with the Thai embassy or your airline well before you travel.
Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
