Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Bangkok. These are the trade-offs.

  • November to February

Cool season — the most comfortable window, dry and slightly cooler. Peak tourist period.

  • March to May

Hot season. Genuinely severe heat and humidity, peaking in April.

  • June to October

Rainy season. Heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain, with the lowest prices.

Before you go

No direct service

There is no non-stop flight between South Africa and Thailand. Every routing connects, most commonly through the Gulf or East Africa.

Two airports

Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang are about 45 km apart. If your onward flight leaves from the other one, allow several hours.

Temple dress

Shoulders and knees covered at temples, including the Grand Palace, which enforces it strictly.

Heat

April is the hottest month and the humidity is relentless. Plan indoor activity for the middle of the day.

About Bangkok

Bangkok is Southeast Asia's great arrival city — temples and river life alongside rooftop bars and shopping malls, and street food that is a destination in itself.

It is also the region's transport hub. Most trips continue somewhere: the islands in the south, Chiang Mai in the north, or on into Vietnam and Cambodia.

Getting in from the airport

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is about 30 km east of the city. The Airport Rail Link takes around 30 minutes to Phaya Thai; taxis take 45 minutes to well over an hour depending on traffic. Don Mueang (DMK) is the second airport and handles most low-cost regional flights — check which one your ticket uses.

Entry requirements for South African passport holders

Thailand operates visa exemptions and visa-on-arrival arrangements for a number of nationalities, and the position for South African passport holders has changed over time. Confirm the current requirement with the Thai embassy or your airline well before travelling, and check whether proof of onward travel and funds is being required.

Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
