Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Mfuwe. These are the trade-offs.
June to October
The season. Dry, animals concentrated on the river, and walking safaris operating. September and October are hottest and best for game.
November to December
The green season begins. Dramatic skies, newborn animals, and lower rates as camps start to close.
January to April
Emerald season. Much of the park floods, most camps close, and access is by boat where it exists at all.
Before you go
Book far ahead
Camps are small, the season is short, and the best ones sell out many months in advance.
Malaria
The Luangwa valley is a malaria area. Medical advice on prophylaxis is essential before travelling.
Walking safaris
South Luangwa is where they began and they remain the reason many people come. They run in the dry season only.
Luggage
Light-aircraft connections have strict soft-bag weight limits. Confirm with your camp before packing.
About Mfuwe
Mfuwe is the gateway to South Luangwa, one of Africa's great wildlife parks and the place where the walking safari was invented. The Luangwa river valley holds exceptional leopard densities and a genuinely wild feel — this is not a park you drive through on a day trip.
The airstrip is small and the season is short. Most camps close through the worst of the rains, so trips here need planning further ahead than most.
Getting in from the airport
Mfuwe Airport (MFU) is about 25 minutes from the main park gate. Camps meet every flight as standard — this is not a destination where you arrange transport on arrival. Most routings connect through Lusaka.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
South African passport holders have historically been able to enter Zambia for tourism without arranging a visa in advance. Confirm the current requirement before you travel.
Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
