Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Lusaka. These are the trade-offs.

  • May to August

Dry, cool winter — the most comfortable months and the start of the best game-viewing season.

  • September to October

Hot and dry before the rains, with the year's best wildlife concentrations at water.

  • November to April

Wet season. Green and dramatic, with some bush camps closing and roads becoming difficult.

Before you go

Currency

Zambian kwacha. Cards work in Lusaka; carry cash once you leave the city.

Malaria

A malaria area, with risk highest in the wet months. Take medical advice on prophylaxis before travelling.

Altitude

Lusaka sits at about 1,300 m, which keeps the climate milder than the valleys.

Onward flights

Domestic connections to Mfuwe and Livingstone are limited and fill early in the dry season. Book them with your international flight.

About Lusaka

Lusaka is Zambia's capital and its commercial centre, sitting high on a plateau in the south of the country. It is a working city rather than a sightseeing one, and carries a large amount of business and family travel from South Africa.

For most visitors it is the connection point: South Luangwa to the east, Lower Zambezi to the south-east, and Livingstone and the falls to the south-west are all onward flights or long drives from here.

Getting in from the airport

Kenneth Kaunda International (LUN) is about 25 km north-east of the city, roughly half an hour outside peak traffic. Arrange a transfer through your hotel; metered taxis operate but agreeing a fare in advance is sensible.

Entry requirements for South African passport holders

South African passport holders have historically been able to enter Zambia for tourism without arranging a visa in advance, and a KAZA UniVisa covering Zambia and Zimbabwe has been available at some entry points. Confirm the current requirement with the Zambian High Commission or your airline before you travel.

Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
