Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Livingstone. These are the trade-offs.

  • February to May

Peak flow after the rains. The falls at their most powerful, and the spray heavy enough to soak you and obscure the view.

  • June to August

High water easing, good views, cool dry weather. The most popular window.

  • September to December

Low water. Less dramatic flow, but this is when Devil's Pool and the best rafting are possible.

Before you go

Which side?

Zambia offers the closer view and Devil's Pool; Zimbabwe offers the wider panorama. The border crossing at the bridge makes doing both practical.

Devil's Pool

Only safe when the water is low, roughly September to December, and only with a guided operator. Do not attempt it independently.

Malaria

A malaria area, highest in the wet season. Take medical advice on prophylaxis.

Getting wet

In high-water months the spray is torrential. Bring a rain jacket and waterproof your phone.

About Livingstone

Livingstone is the Zambian side of Victoria Falls, and the two sides are genuinely different trips. Zambia gives you the closer, wetter view along the Knife Edge Bridge, and — when the water is low, usually September to December — Devil's Pool, the rock lip you can swim to at the very edge of the drop.

The town itself is small and colonial-era, a few kilometres upriver from the falls, with the Zambezi and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the doorstep.

Getting in from the airport

Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International (LVI) is about 5 km from town and roughly 15 minutes from the falls. Hotels run transfers; taxis meet flights.

Entry requirements for South African passport holders

South African passport holders have historically been able to enter Zambia for tourism without a visa arranged in advance, and a KAZA UniVisa covering both Zambia and Zimbabwe has been available at some entry points — useful if you plan to see both sides of the falls. Confirm the current position before travelling.

Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
