Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Nelspruit. These are the trade-offs.

  • May to September

Dry season and the best game viewing of the year — thin bush, animals concentrated at water. Cool mornings on game drives.

  • October to November

Warming up, the bush greening, newborn animals about. Fewer visitors than the dry-season peak.

  • December to March

Hot and wet. Lush and beautiful, but the bush is thick and game is harder to spot. Highest malaria risk.

  • April

The transition — still green, drying out, quieter than the winter peak.

Before you go

Domestic flight

No passport or visa needed within South Africa, but you will still need a valid photo ID to board.

Currency

South African rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Malaria

The Kruger lowveld is a malaria-risk area, highest in the wet summer months. Speak to a travel clinic or your doctor about prophylaxis well before you fly — this is a medical decision, not a travel tip.

Park gate times

Kruger's gates open and close with the sun and the times shift by season. Arriving after closing means being turned away, so check the current times before you drive.

Self-drive

The southern Kruger's main roads are tarred and an ordinary hire car is fine. Book camp accommodation well ahead in school holidays.

About Nelspruit

Kruger Mpumalanga International sits outside Mbombela (Nelspruit) and is the standard arrival point for the southern Kruger National Park — the most game-rich and most visited section, and the one closest to the private reserves of Sabi Sand.

The Panorama Route is the other reason to fly here: the Blyde River Canyon, God's Window and the escarpment viewpoints are all within a couple of hours, and most people combine the two into a single trip.

Getting in from the airport

Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP) is about 27 km from Mbombela and roughly half an hour from the Kruger's Numbi and Malelane gates. Nearly everyone hires a car — self-driving the park is the point for many visitors — though lodges in the private reserves will usually arrange a transfer.
