Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Johannesburg. These are the trade-offs.
March to May
Autumn — dry, mild and clear. Arguably the best weather of the year on the Highveld.
June to August
Winter. Cold mornings, warm sunny afternoons, almost no rain. Bring a jacket for the evenings.
September to November
Spring, warming up, with the jacarandas out in October and the first afternoon thunderstorms.
December to February
Summer — hot, with dramatic late-afternoon storms that clear quickly. Quieter in the city as locals head to the coast.
Before you go
Domestic flight
No passport or visa needed within South Africa, but you will still need a valid photo ID to board.
Currency
South African rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Altitude
Johannesburg sits at about 1,750 m. Expect to feel it for a day or two, and drink more water than you think you need.
Getting around
The city is built for cars. The Gautrain covers the Sandton–Pretoria–airport corridor well; beyond that, e-hailing is the practical default.
About Johannesburg
Johannesburg is the country's commercial engine and its busiest air gateway — almost every domestic route and most international ones pass through OR Tambo. For a lot of travellers it is the connection rather than the destination, which undersells it.
The city rewards people who arrive with a plan: Maboneng and Braamfontein for food and galleries, Constitution Hill and the Apartheid Museum for the history that shaped the country, and Soweto for the tours that made township tourism serious. The Cradle of Humankind is under an hour out.
Getting in from the airport
OR Tambo International (JNB) is about 25 km east of the city centre, in Ekurhuleni. The Gautrain runs from the airport to Sandton in roughly 15 minutes and is the fastest way in during rush hour; e-hailing, metered taxis and car hire all operate from the terminal. Lanseria (HLA), to the north-west, is the alternative for some domestic flights and is closer to Sandton and Pretoria.
