Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Bulawayo. These are the trade-offs.
May to August
Dry winter. Warm days, cold nights, best game viewing at Hwange.
September to October
Hot and dry ahead of the rains.
November to April
Wet season — green, with afternoon storms and thicker bush.
Before you go
Currency
US dollars in small denominations are the practical choice.
Matobo
The Matobo Hills are about an hour south and need a vehicle or an organised tour.
Malaria
Risk is seasonal and higher in the lower-lying areas towards Hwange. Take medical advice for your itinerary.
About Bulawayo
Bulawayo is Zimbabwe's second city, known for wide colonial-era streets and a slower pace than Harare. It is the country's historic industrial centre and retains a strong sense of its own identity.
The Matobo Hills are the main draw — a landscape of balancing granite boulders with some of the densest rock art in the region, and Cecil Rhodes's grave at World's View. Hwange National Park is a few hours north-west.
Getting in from the airport
Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International (BUQ) is about 22 km north of the city, roughly half an hour. Taxis meet flights; arranging a transfer through your accommodation is the simpler option.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
South African passport holders have historically been able to enter Zimbabwe for tourism without a visa arranged in advance. Confirm the current requirement with the Zimbabwean embassy or your airline before travelling.
Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
