Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Richards Bay. These are the trade-offs.
April to September
Dry season — lower humidity, better game viewing, and the most comfortable weather.
October to November
Warming up, with turtle nesting starting along the coast.
December to March
Hot, humid and wet. Lush, but harder going in the middle of the day.
Before you go
Domestic flight
No passport or visa needed within South Africa, but you will still need a valid photo ID to board.
Currency
South African rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Malaria
Northern KwaZulu-Natal, particularly towards the Mozambican border, carries a seasonal malaria risk. Take medical advice for the specific area you are visiting.
Humidity
Summer here is hot and humid. Pack light clothing and plan activity for early or late.
About Richards Bay
Richards Bay is a deep-water port on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast and a working industrial town, so much of the traffic here is business travel.
For visitors it is the practical gateway to the Elephant Coast — iSimangaliso Wetland Park, St Lucia and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi are all within a comfortable drive, which is a strong combination of wetland, coast and Big Five country.
Getting in from the airport
Richards Bay Airport (RCB) is about 5 km from the town centre. Hire a car — the reserves and coastal parks that justify the trip are all a drive away and public transport between them is minimal.
