Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Mauritius. These are the trade-offs.

  • May to November

Winter — cooler, drier and less humid, with the best conditions for walking and diving. Peak for South African travellers.

  • December to April

Summer. Hot and humid with heavier rain and cyclone risk, but the warmest sea.

  • September to October

Often the sweet spot — dry, warm and outside the busiest periods.

Before you go

No malaria

Mauritius is not a malaria area, which is part of why it suits families with young children.

Cyclones

The season runs roughly November to April. Cyclones are infrequent but disruptive when they occur.

Driving

On the left, like South Africa. Roads are good, though narrow in places.

Reef shoes

Lagoon floors can be sharp in places. Worth packing if you plan to swim off the beach rather than a jetty.

About Mauritius

Mauritius is ringed almost entirely by coral reef, which gives it the calm turquoise lagoons it is known for. It is small enough to cross in a couple of hours, and the interior is more dramatic than the brochures suggest — Black River Gorges and the mountains behind Port Louis are worth a day.

It is a long-standing favourite for South African honeymoons and family holidays, with a resort infrastructure to match and a genuinely mixed Creole, Indian, French and Chinese culture.

Getting in from the airport

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International (MRU) is in the south-east, about 45 km from Port Louis and 30 to 60 minutes from most resort areas. Hotels arrange transfers; car hire is straightforward and driving is on the left, as in South Africa.

Entry requirements for South African passport holders

Mauritius has generally admitted South African passport holders for tourism without a visa arranged in advance, subject to holding a return ticket and confirmed accommodation. Confirm the current requirement and permitted stay with the Mauritian High Commission or your airline before travelling.

Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
