Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Maun. These are the trade-offs.

  • May to September

Peak season. The floodwaters arrive from Angola, the delta fills, and game concentrates — cool, dry and the best time to visit.

  • October to November

Very hot and drying out. Excellent game viewing at shrinking water sources, but demanding heat.

  • December to April

Green season. Rain, thicker bush, newborn animals and lower rates, though some camps close.

Before you go

Light aircraft luggage

Onward flights into the delta have strict limits, commonly around 20 kg in a soft bag with no rigid frame. Confirm the exact limit with your camp — hard suitcases are frequently refused.

Malaria

The delta is a malaria area, with the highest risk in the wet summer months. Take medical advice on prophylaxis before travelling.

Currency

Botswana pula. Cards work in Maun; carry cash for tips in the camps.

Book early

Delta camps are small and the flood season sells out far in advance.

About Maun

Maun is the staging post for the Okavango Delta — the inland delta where the river spreads across the Kalahari and never reaches the sea. Almost everyone arriving here transfers straight onto a light aircraft into a camp.

It is a functional town rather than a destination, and the flight over the delta on the way in is often described as the best part of the journey.

Getting in from the airport

Maun Airport (MUB) is right at the edge of town. Most visitors do not leave the airport at all — camps arrange a light-aircraft transfer that departs from the same terminal, usually within an hour or two of arrival.

Entry requirements for South African passport holders

South African passport holders have historically been able to enter Botswana for tourism without a visa arranged in advance. Confirm the current requirement and permitted stay with the Botswana High Commission or your airline before travelling.

Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
