Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Margate. These are the trade-offs.
April to September
Dry season — warm days, low humidity, and the sardine run passing through around June and July.
October to March
Hot, humid and wettest, and the busiest over the December holidays.
Before you go
Domestic flight
No passport or visa needed within South Africa, but you will still need a valid photo ID to board.
Currency
South African rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Limited schedule
Few flights and some seasonal. Build slack into tight plans, and check the Durban alternative.
Swimming
Stick to the netted, lifeguarded beaches along the South Coast.
Sardine run
Roughly June to July, when the shoals move up the coast. Timing varies year to year and is never guaranteed.
About Margate
Margate is the main town of KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast, a stretch of warm-water beaches and holiday towns running south from Durban towards the Eastern Cape border.
The flight saves a long drive from Johannesburg, and the coast either side — Ramsgate, Southbroom, Port Edward — is a well-established family holiday belt. Divers come for Protea Banks.
Getting in from the airport
Margate Airport (MGH) is close to town, a few minutes by road. The schedule is small and seasonal, so confirm your transfer or hire car in advance. A vehicle is useful for reaching the beaches either side.
