Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Mthatha. These are the trade-offs.
April to June
Autumn — clear, mild and dry, the best conditions for the coast.
July to September
Winter. Cool but sunny inland, with whales offshore.
October to December
Warming into summer, greener, with rain building.
January to March
Summer — warm, humid and the wettest months.
Before you go
Domestic flight
No passport or visa needed within South Africa, but you will still need a valid photo ID to board.
Currency
South African rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Wild Coast roads
Access roads to the coastal villages are often unsurfaced and can be slow going, especially after rain. Confirm your hire agreement allows gravel.
Plan daylight
Rural driving after dark is best avoided here — livestock on the road is common.
About Mthatha
Mthatha is the main centre of the former Transkei and the closest airport to the Wild Coast — the stretch of rolling green hills and undeveloped shoreline running between East London and Port Edward.
It is also Nelson Mandela's home region; the museum in town and Qunu nearby are the reason a good number of visitors make the trip.
Getting in from the airport
Mthatha Airport (UTT) is about 15 km from the town centre. A hire car is close to essential: the coastal destinations are one to three hours away and many of the final approaches are gravel.
