About Geneva
Geneva sits at the western end of its lake, against the French border, and is the headquarters of much of the international system — the UN, the Red Cross and a long list of other organisations.
For most leisure travellers it is the gateway to the Alps: Chamonix is about an hour away and the major French and Swiss ski resorts are within two.
Getting in from the airport
Geneva Airport (GVA) is about 5 km from the centre, roughly 10 minutes by train. Ski transfers to the French and Swiss resorts leave directly from the terminal and are usually booked in advance.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
Switzerland is in the Schengen area and South African passport holders require a Schengen visa arranged before travel. Apply early — appointments and processing take weeks.
