Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Geneva. These are the trade-offs.

  • December to April

Ski season, and the main reason most visitors fly here.

  • June to September

Summer — lake swimming, and the Alps open for hiking and cycling.

  • October to November

Quietest and cheapest, between the seasons.

Before you go

Schengen visa

Required in advance, and note the French border is immediately adjacent — a Schengen visa covers both sides.

Ski transfers

Book resort transfers ahead, particularly on winter Saturdays when the roads are at their busiest.

Cost

Expensive, like the rest of Switzerland. The French side of the border is often cheaper.

About Geneva

Geneva sits at the western end of its lake, against the French border, and is the headquarters of much of the international system — the UN, the Red Cross and a long list of other organisations.

For most leisure travellers it is the gateway to the Alps: Chamonix is about an hour away and the major French and Swiss ski resorts are within two.

Getting in from the airport

Geneva Airport (GVA) is about 5 km from the centre, roughly 10 minutes by train. Ski transfers to the French and Swiss resorts leave directly from the terminal and are usually booked in advance.

Entry requirements for South African passport holders

Switzerland is in the Schengen area and South African passport holders require a Schengen visa arranged before travel. Apply early — appointments and processing take weeks.

Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
