Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Entebbe. These are the trade-offs.

  • June to September

Dry season — the best window for gorilla trekking, with firmer forest trails.

  • December to February

The second dry season. Also good for trekking and generally clear.

  • March to May and October to November

Wet seasons. Trails are muddy and hard going, but permits and lodges are easier to secure.

Before you go

Gorilla permits

Permits are limited, expensive and must be secured months in advance through an operator or the wildlife authority. Do not travel expecting to buy one on arrival.

Malaria

A malaria area. Take medical advice on prophylaxis before travelling.

Yellow fever

Proof of vaccination is commonly required for entry. Check the current requirement before you fly.

Trekking fitness

Gorilla trekking can involve several hours of steep, muddy walking at altitude. Prepare for it.

About Entebbe

Entebbe sits on the shore of Lake Victoria and is Uganda's international gateway, about 40 km from Kampala. It is a calmer place than the capital and many visitors stay here rather than in the city.

Uganda's headline attraction is gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, in the far south-west — a long drive or a domestic flight away. Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls national parks make up the rest of the classic circuit.

Getting in from the airport

Entebbe International (EBB) is a few kilometres from Entebbe town and about 40 km from Kampala — allow well over an hour to the capital in traffic. Tour operators meet flights; onward domestic flights to Bwindi and the western parks leave from the same airport.

Entry requirements for South African passport holders

Uganda operates an electronic visa system for most visitors, applied for online before travel, and participates in an East Africa Tourist Visa covering several countries. Arrangements for South African passport holders have varied — confirm the current requirement with the Ugandan High Commission or your airline well before you travel.

Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
