Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Kilimanjaro. These are the trade-offs.
June to October
Long dry season — the best window for both climbing and safari, and the busiest.
January to February
Short dry season. Clear and warm, good for climbing, with the Serengeti calving season on the southern plains.
March to May
Long rains. Wettest, hardest climbing conditions, lowest prices.
November to December
Short rains — often manageable, with fewer people.
Before you go
Malaria
A malaria area, particularly at lower altitudes. Take medical advice on prophylaxis before travelling.
Altitude
Kilimanjaro is a serious altitude undertaking. Choose a route with adequate acclimatisation days and take the risk seriously.
Yellow fever
Proof of vaccination may be required depending on your routing. Check before you fly.
Book operators early
Reputable climbing and safari operators fill months ahead in the dry season.
About Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro International sits between Arusha and Moshi and is the arrival point for two very different trips: climbing Africa's highest mountain, and the northern safari circuit of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara.
Arusha is where most safaris are organised and where climbers spend their last night before the mountain.
Getting in from the airport
Kilimanjaro International (JRO) is about 45 km from both Arusha and Moshi, roughly an hour to either. Tour operators and climbing companies meet flights as standard — confirm the transfer when you book your trip.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
Tanzania operates a visa system for most visitors, with electronic application in advance and visa-on-arrival at some entry points. Arrangements for South African passport holders have varied — confirm the current requirement with the Tanzanian High Commission or your airline well before you travel.
Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
