Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Walvis Bay. These are the trade-offs.
December to March
Warmest, with the clearest coastal weather and the busiest local season.
April to September
Cooler, with persistent coastal fog some mornings — an atmosphere the coast is known for.
October to November
Warming up, generally settled.
Before you go
Cold ocean
The Benguela current makes the Atlantic here genuinely cold. This is a coast for looking at rather than swimming in.
Fog
Coastal fog is common and can delay flights and scenic trips. Build slack into tight itineraries.
Currency
Namibian dollar, pegged to the rand; rand is accepted widely.
About Walvis Bay
Walvis Bay is Namibia's main port and the arrival point for the central coast, where the Namib's dunes run straight into a cold Atlantic. The lagoon here is a major flamingo site.
Swakopmund, half an hour north, is where most visitors actually stay — a German-colonial seaside town that is the base for dune boarding, quad biking and scenic flights over the Skeleton Coast.
Getting in from the airport
Walvis Bay Airport (WVB) is about 12 km from town and roughly 40 minutes from Swakopmund. Car hire and shuttles operate; a vehicle is useful if you plan to go beyond the two towns.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
South African passport holders have historically been able to enter Namibia without arranging a visa in advance, but the country has been revising its rules. Confirm the current requirement with the Namibian High Commission or your airline before you travel.
Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
