Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Upington. These are the trade-offs.

  • March to May

Autumn — warm, dry and far more comfortable than midsummer.

  • June to August

Winter. Cold nights, mild days, and the best Kgalagadi game viewing around waterholes.

  • September to October

    Spring, heating rapidly.

  • November to February

Summer — extreme heat, regularly above 40°C. Plan carefully.

Before you go

Domestic flight

No passport or visa needed within South Africa, but you will still need a valid photo ID to board.

Currency

South African rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Extreme heat

Summer temperatures here are among the highest in the country. Carry far more water than you think you need.

Remote driving

Long distances between fuel stops and gravel access to the Kgalagadi. Check your hire agreement covers unsurfaced roads.

Border crossing

Upington is a common jumping-off point for Namibia. If you plan to cross, your hire company needs to authorise it in advance.

About Upington

Upington sits on the Orange River in the Northern Cape, a green strip of vineyards and irrigation running through otherwise arid country. It is the last substantial town before the Kalahari.

Most visitors are heading somewhere else: the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park to the north, Augrabies Falls to the west, or across into Namibia. The airport's long runway is a legacy of that remoteness.

Getting in from the airport

Upington Airport (UTN) is about 7 km from town. Car hire is essential for anything beyond Upington itself — the Kgalagadi is roughly a four-hour drive north and much of the final approach is gravel.
