Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Toronto. These are the trade-offs.
May to September
Warm to hot, with the waterfront and the islands at their best. Summer is the season.
September to October
Autumn — mild, with the foliage north of the city through October.
November to March
Cold, often severely, with heavy snow. Lowest fares, and the PATH underground network keeps downtown walkable.
Before you go
Visa in advance
Required, with biometrics, and slow to process. Apply early.
Winter is serious
January and February regularly sit well below freezing. Pack accordingly or visit in summer.
Tipping
Expected at around 15 to 20% in restaurants.
Tax at the till
Sales tax is added at the counter rather than shown on the price tag.
About Toronto
Toronto is Canada's largest city and one of the most genuinely multicultural anywhere — roughly half the population was born outside the country, and the food scene reflects it neighbourhood by neighbourhood.
There is a sizeable South African community here, and this route carries a lot of family travel. Niagara Falls is about ninety minutes away, and Montreal five hours by train.
Getting in from the airport
Pearson (YYZ) is about 25 km north-west of downtown. The UP Express train reaches Union Station in 25 minutes and is the simplest way in; taxis and ride-hailing take longer in traffic.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
Canada requires South African passport holders to obtain a visitor visa before travelling. The application involves biometrics and supporting documents and processing can take considerable time. Follow official Government of Canada guidance and apply well in advance of any booking you cannot change.
Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
