Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.
Best time to fly
Weather, crowds and fares move together in Mombasa. These are the trade-offs.
December to March
Hot, dry and sunny — the peak coastal season.
July to October
Cooler and dry, pairing well with the Mara migration inland.
April to June
Long rains. Humid and wet, with the lowest prices.
Before you go
Malaria
The Kenyan coast is a malaria area. Take medical advice on prophylaxis before travelling.
Getting to Diani
The Likoni ferry can involve long waits. Some visitors fly on to Ukunda instead — worth checking when planning.
Dress
The coast is largely Muslim. Beachwear is fine at resorts; cover up in town and villages.
About Mombasa
Mombasa is Kenya's second city and its main port, built on an island with a Swahili old town and the Portuguese-built Fort Jesus at its heart.
Most visitors are heading for the beaches either side — Diani to the south, Nyali and Bamburi to the north — which combine with a Mara safari to make the classic Kenyan two-centre trip.
Getting in from the airport
Moi International (MBA) is about 10 km from the city centre. Diani, the best-known beach area, is south of Mombasa and involves a ferry crossing or a longer road route — allow well over an hour and arrange a transfer in advance.
Entry requirements for South African passport holders
Kenya requires an electronic travel authorisation approved before departure for most arrivals. Requirements for South African passport holders have changed recently — check the official portal and confirm with your airline before travelling.
Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
