Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Maseru. These are the trade-offs.

  • March to May

Autumn — clear, settled and mild. The best hiking and riding conditions.

  • June to August

Winter. Genuinely cold with snow in the highlands, and a short ski season at Afriski.

  • September to February

Spring and summer — green, with afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains.

Before you go

Very limited schedule

Few flights operate. Build slack into your plans and consider the road alternative from Bloemfontein.

Altitude and cold

The whole country is high, and winter nights are severe. Pack far warmer clothing than for the surrounding lowveld.

Mountain driving

Passes like Sani are steep and rough. A 4x4 is needed for much of the highlands.

About Maseru

Maseru is Lesotho's capital, on the Caledon River right against the South African border. Lesotho is the only country entirely above 1,000 m, and the mountains start almost immediately outside the city.

The air schedule is very limited — many travellers drive in from Bloemfontein or Ladybrand instead — but flying saves a long road trip for those short on time.

Getting in from the airport

Moshoeshoe I International (MSU) is about 20 km from Maseru. The flight schedule is limited, so confirm your transfer in advance rather than expecting options on arrival. A 4x4 is advisable for the mountain passes.

Entry requirements for South African passport holders

South African passport holders have historically been able to enter Lesotho for tourism without a visa arranged in advance. Confirm the current requirement with the Lesotho High Commission or your airline before travelling.

Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
