Per-payment figures are the all-in total divided by 3 and rounded. The number of payments and the schedule differ by partner — Happy Pay splits over 2 — and your own plan depends on that partner's approval. You see it in full before you confirm. Fares are the lowest seen for a sample date about six weeks out, not a quote; airline pricing moves constantly.

Best time to fly

Weather, crowds and fares move together in Cairo. These are the trade-offs.

  • October to April

The season — warm days, cool nights, and bearable conditions at the sites.

  • March to April and October to November

The sweet spots either side of winter: comfortable and less busy than the peak.

  • May to September

Very hot, regularly above 38°C, which makes daytime sightseeing hard going. Cheapest fares.

Before you go

Heat

Summer is severe and the sites have almost no shade. Start at dawn or don't go in July.

Persistent selling

Around the Pyramids especially. A firm, polite no repeated consistently is the only approach that works.

Water

Drink bottled water only, and be careful with ice and salads outside established restaurants.

Dress

Modest dress is expected, particularly for women and at religious sites.

About Cairo

Cairo is enormous, loud and unlike anywhere else, and the Pyramids of Giza sit at the edge of it — close enough to the suburbs that the first sight of them from the road is genuinely startling.

The Egyptian Museum holds the Tutankhamun collection, and the Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza has taken over much of it. Luxor and Aswan, and the Nile cruises between them, are a short domestic flight south.

Getting in from the airport

Cairo International (CAI) is about 20 km north-east of the centre, though traffic makes the drive unpredictable. Arrange a transfer through your hotel — this is not a city for negotiating an unmetered taxi on arrival. Giza is on the opposite side of the city from the airport; allow well over an hour between them.

Entry requirements for South African passport holders

Egypt requires a visa for most visitors, commonly available on arrival for short tourist stays and also obtainable electronically in advance. Arrangements for South African passport holders have varied — confirm the current requirement with the Egyptian embassy or your airline before travelling.

Entry rules change. Confirm the current requirements with the destination's embassy or consulate before you travel — this page is a guide, not an authority.
